Rare Discipline in braided hemp with 6 straps from an old monastery. Stains and traces of use. PERIOD : late 19th / early 20th SIZE : 50cm SIZE : 20" A discipline is a small flail (whip) used as an instrument of penance by members of certain Christian denominations (including Anglicans, Lutherans and Roman Catholics among others) in the spiritual discipline known as mortification of the flesh. The use of flagellation among certain religious goes back to ancient traditions and is often associated with extreme ascetic practices. Religious who practice flogging do so with the aim of spiritually purifying themselves and mortifying their flesh. This practice can be seen as a form of extreme bodily discipline and penance to atone for sins. Some religious people believe that flagellation strengthens their relationship with God and helps them to come closer to the suffering of Christ. However, it should be noted that this practice is not common in all religious traditions and is often considered controversial and marginal.
